Why Grace UMC Is My Home Church
We will be posting from time to time why our members have chosen Grace UMC as their home church. Today, we are featuring Joanne Boldt. She has been an active member of Grace UMC for 44 years. She is also active on the Staff-Parish relations, Church Council, Children’s ministries, Vacation Bible school ministries. She attends Sisters In Christ and Journeys Sunday School group and is part of the Grace Prayer Chain ministry.
These are Joanne’s words as to why she is a long time member of Grace UMC.
Gary and I were married in a small Methodist church in Cerro Gordo, Il. As I taught in Cerro Gordo at the time, we lived in a small home there and continued to attend church there. A year after we married, we moved to Decatur. After the move, we made the decision to look for a church to attend in Decatur. Having been in a small church my whole life, I decided we would look for “small” in Decatur. We attended a few smaller United Methodist Churches and not feeling any particular attachment, one Sunday we decided to attend Grace United Methodist Church. At that time Grace had one of, if not the largest, Methodist congregations in the city. After that one service, we were sold! I personally felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in Grace more than I had at any church I had ever attended. Dr. Bill Jones was the Senior Pastor, and his words and his very presence touched my heart. I knew this was where God wanted us to be. Shortly after joining, Gary became involved in the TV Ministry at Grace and remained a loyal member of the crew for over thirty years. All of our four children were baptized and confirmed at Grace. Three of our four were married there. It had become and remains MY church!
